As I have already mentioned, when my dear friend Irek found out that I'm going to make
a website about different types of cameras he encouraged me to add a subpage about
Pentax cameras. I did agree, but had some doubts. I was afraid because I did not use this
camera in practice. Nevertheless I hope that with Irek's help, some information obtained
from brochures, user s manuals, the Internet, etc. I would be able to create an
interesting website. But first, an important notice. Further descriptions will concern the
K-bayonet cameras. Hence you will find here neither a description of Pentax M42x1 screw
mount nor medium format cameras. The description layout will be the same as for the
other systems presented on my website - you will find a calendar of important dates here,
description of individual bodies (divided into groups, e.g. K, M, A, P, SF, Z, MZ, *ist etc.),
brand-name lenses (also divided into families K, M, A, FA, FA J etc.), lamps, macro
equipment, drives etc. Despite the fact that this is a website where classic film cameras
are discussed I think that some digital bodies will be described as well. Pentax System
somehow falls behind when compared with Canon for example. In my opinion, the world
would be dull if the market of particular products was controlled by monopolists. Lets
imagine the place where all photographic cameras are produced Canon, all cameras are
produced by Sony, and all cars are produced by Toyota. Such things, like the fact that
this is the first Japanese company that has been producing the SLR cameras since 1952,
are in favour of Pentax. (Canon, Nikon and Minolta produced their first reflex cameras in
1959). What's more, Pentax offers good compatibility with accessories, as the company
has not changed a lens mount since the introduction of K-bayonet in the 70's. We must
emphasise the fact that things couldn't go in a different, because the Pentax customers
would definitely not stand such often changes of the M42x1 screw mount to K-bayonet
and again, another change a few years later to a new bayonet due to introduction of AF
system. Consequently, the company, to a certain point, was obliged to leave the
K-bayonet mount, which is in favour of this system comparing to the competitors,
especially that we can use the M42x1 lenses to Pentax camera via the K-mount adapter,
and therefore focusing can be to infinity, which, as we know, in Nikon system is a bit
problematic. Pentax is a medium-format camera manufacturer. We can use adapters that
allow interchanging lenses between big and small format cameras and digital. It is not
meaningless that the prices of Pentax equipment are favourable. The above features
make that the Pentax system is worth our attention.
